According to a joint statement from U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Premier Doug Ford, Ontario has decided to halt its 25% tax on power exports to the United States.
According to the statement, Ford will meet with Lutnick in Washington on Thursday to talk about “a renewed USMCA ahead of the April 2 reciprocal tariff deadline.”
The change of direction follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that, in retribution for Ontario’s energy export tax, he will increase planned tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium to 50%.
