Calgary sees the coldest start to February in 50 years with more arctic air ahead

May be an image of twilight

The frigid temperatures in Calgary, Alta., certainly aren’t unprecedented, but the longevity is increasingly becoming noteworthy as the major city sees its coldest start to February since 1975. #ABwx

A brutal, long-duration cold snap struck Calgary, Alta., just as we turned the page into February, creating the coldest start to the month in 50 years.

The average temperature fell below -20°C for the first eight days of the month, the coldest start to February since 1975.

Calgary wasn’t the only cold pocket in the province, however.

Here are a few other select Alberta cities that were facing a deep, and sometimes dangerous, chill:

Edmonton (city): -19.8°C (11°C below normal)

Pincher Creek: -20°C (16°C below normal)

Medicine Hat: -20°C (14°C below normal)

Fort McMurray: -21.3°C (7°C below normal)

When will the cold snap end?

This cold snap is extra stubborn, and there’s no clear end in sight. Over the next week, temperatures will average 10-15 degrees below seasonal across central and southern Alberta.

Eventually, some milder Pacific temperatures will attempt to dislodge the Arctic air, but that’s not forecast to occur until nearly the third week of February, when temperatures across Alberta will hopefully stabilize closer to seasonal values.
