On March 14th, the Moon will slip into Earth’s shadow, turning a deep shade of red in a breathtaking total lunar eclipse, for the first time in two years!
As the Moon moves through Earth’s umbra, or the inner part of Earth’s shadow, some of the sunlight passing through our atmosphere reaches the Moon’s surface. Shorter wavelengths like blue vanish, while longer red and orange hues remain, painting the Moon in eerie crimson tones. The more dust or clouds in our sky, the deeper the red!
Mark your calendars, find a clear view of the night sky, and prepare to witness the return of the Blood Moon!
