Teen missing after sliding through ice in British Columbia: RCMP

Authorities are searching for a youngster who went through thin ice on Shuswap Lake in British Columbia on Saturday night.

Officers were notified of the incident between Raven subdivision and Sandy Point at approximately 2:00 p.m., according to the Salmon Arm RCMP.

The 18-year-old was still missing at 5:30 p.m. despite the arrival of paramedics, firefighters, and search and rescue volunteers.

According to the detachment, RCMP divers were also summoned in to assist with the continuing investigation.

“At this time we are asking the public to stay off local lakes as the conditions are currently unsafe despite the cold temperatures,” Staff Sgt. Simon Scott of the Salmon Arm RCMP said in a statement. “We urge increased precautions if anyone is interacting near icy bodies of water.”

Police said they would not provide further details for the time being.
